French Startup ALLEGRO Introduces H.264/MPEG-4 AVC First Compliance Test Suites at IBC (Hall 2 Stand 315)

French Startup ALLEGRO Introduces H.264/MPEG-4 AVC First Compliance Test Suites at IBC (Hall 2 Stand 315)

Allegro Bitstreams Allow IC Vendors, OEMs and Broadcasters to Certify Their H.264/AVC Decoding Platforms Exhaustively

GRENOBLE, France, September 2/PRNewswire/ -- Allegro, the Digital Video Technology company focused on the
H.264/AVC standard, will introduce MPEG-4 AVC first certification tools at
the next IBC in Amsterdam.

The Allegro Test Suites are first class tools able to
guarantee an H.264 /AVC video decoder to be compliant with the H.264 /AVC
standard. Created by ALLEGRO using its own H.264 encoder, the Allegro test
package includes also several proprietary tools which help to reduce debug
time dramatically.

H.264/AVC is the innovating emerging compression video
standard, which brings a 50% bitrate saving compared to the well established
MPEG-2 video standard. Due to improved coding tools (enhanced motion
estimation, CABAC coding, loop filtering...), H.264/MPEG4-AVC real-time
decoding is much more complex to achieve than any other video compression
standard.

Allegro's Test suites cover all H.264 potential applications
(including tests for Baseline, Main, and High profiles) and all potential
video resolutions from Level 2 (CIF) to Level 4.1 (High definition).

All Test Suites hold Syntax, Stress and Error Concealment
tests which allow a complete validation of H.264 decoders. They can be
delivered in several system formats: NAL units, byte stream NAL, MPEG-2
Transport Stream (13818-1). Certification bitstreams are particularly
important to ensure first generation H.264 capable devices to be compatible
with today's and tomorrow's encoders.

"Our Compliance Test Suites enable faster time-to-market,
which is vital for the success of any commercial product. Risks and costs are
cut radically through a reliable sign-off test suite during production. Video
decoders tested by Allegro are guaranteed to be 100% compliant with new
H.264/AVC standard.. They are the first H.264 certification tools available
on the market," stated Pierre Marty, Allegro CEO.

Allegro Tests suites have already been acquired by more than 15 leading
companies of the digital video industry.

Prices range from 20 000 Euros to 100 000 Euros.

Allegro products can be seen at IBC 2005 Hall 2 stand 315.

Ready for Deployment: Micronas Introduces Complete Software Stack for Digital STB

Fully integrated digital TV middleware jump-starts digital STB development

BERLIN, Germany, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IFA 2005 -- Micronas today announced the successful porting of LogiWays' Magello digital TV middleware to the Micronas MDE 95xyD set-top box (STB) chip in cooperation with Nagravision, a world leader for conditional access (CA) systems. As a result, Micronas now offers a complete hardware/software solution enabling fast and easy market access.

As a fully integrated Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB)-compliant system MPEG-2 decoder chip, the MDE 95xyD serves a multitude of applications ranging from zapping-only free-to-air (public) STBs to full-featured personal video recorder (PVR) boxes. With the MDE 95xyD family and the recently introduced fourth generation of COFDM demodulator ICs, DRX 397xD, Micronas offers a complete system solution for the expanding DVB-T markets.

Magello is highly customizable digital TV middleware. It is a market- proven solution already deployed in DVB markets such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Magello supports several CA systems, including all Nagravision's CA systems, opening an even wider range of possible pay-TV applications for the MDE 95xyD family, including secure push-VOD and secure storage off-the-shelf solutions.

"The exciting thing about the combination of LogiWay's Magello with the MDE 95xyD family is its versatility," said Reinhard Steffens, Director System Marketing Set-Top Box at Micronas. "The MDE 95xyD decoder family covers a wide range of STB and iDTV consumer devices; Magello is the enabler for our customers to have the same flexibility in the software running in the box. As a result, their STB designs can be targeted to the specific hardware and software requirements of a market segment at optimal economics."

"Making Magello available on the Micronas MDED platform opens interesting and new applications to us," said Christophe Van Der Werf, Vice President Sales & Marketing at LogiWays. The chip supports maximum resolution of 128RGBx128 and is available for gate lines ranging from 16 to 128 as well as for 96RGB and 64RGB. This is a single chip solution, which integrates a Gate/Source drive and step-up, oscillator all onto one chip, and runs at single power of 2.5 ~ 3.3V. The solution is also available for low voltage I/O at minimum 1.65V and consumes low power, especially in standby and 8 color mode. It supports various interfaces including 16/8bit 80MPU system and SPI, 16/6 bit RGB and VSYNC. The chip also supports video file and screen shifting function. This solution can be applied to all TFT modules smaller than 1.5", and is used in the external screen of folder type mobile phones, or the main screen of simpler mobile products, as well as other smaller-size color displays.

Yoshio Imamura, Chief Technology Officer of MagnaChip's Display Solutions Division, commented, "This is the first TFT driver IC supporting resolutions below QQVGA. Our latest offering is expected to drive the replacement cycle of color STN or OLED modules of similar size and resolution with TFT modules. In products of resolution below QQVGA, there is no other product competing against TFT driver ICs. By mid 2006, however, it is forecasted that market share of CSTN modules and TFT modules will be reversed, with TFT driver future technology and growth. The price gap between CSTN modules with resolution lower than QQVGA and TFT modules has already reduced notably."

Mass production of this new product is scheduled for January 2006 and it will be manufactured on a 0.18 um process at MagnaChip's wafer fabrication facilities, located in Cheongju, Korea.

Atmel and LG Electronics, Inc. Collaborate on a DMB Extension for LG's New Laptop Family

Atmel and LG Electronics, Inc. Collaborate on a DMB Extension for LG's New Laptop Family

HEILBRONN, Germany and SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 2
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:ATML), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, and LG International Co., Ltd. announced today a new family of laptop computers with DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcast), based on Atmel's ATR2740 DAB baseband processor. The LG LW40 Express is equipped with Atmel's latest DAB baseband processor, and is the world's first DMB notebook PC. This model features a 14- inch wide LCD screen with a WXGA resolution of 1280x768 and a ratio of 15:9, targetted towards the DVD market. The fine bright LCD installed in this model shows deep and clear images, appealing to consumers who seek enhanced entertainment features.

Also, the DMB notebook PC features functions such as DMB watching and recording, channel registration, broadcast-reception sense indication, and channel scanning, as well as booked recording, picture capture, and intelligent update (automatically downloading software from the Internet and upgrading itself), thus enhancing the user's experience.

"We selected Atmel's solution due to the impressive performance and flexibility, especially the USB interface was a very useful feature to us," said Mr. K.H. Kim from the PC Marketing Team of LG. "The co-work between Atmel and LG was enjoyable and very satisfying to us."

"We are very proud that LG selected our new baseband processor to realize this fantastic application," said Carsten Friedrich, Atmel's Cellular Marketing Manager. "We hope that this will be one of the successes of LG on the new and upcoming DMB market in Korea."

The DMB feature is realized with the help of Atmel's ATR2740 baseband processor, which provides a high level of flexibility and performance. This baseband processor is controlled by a standard ARM(R) core, making it easy to create customized software due to the controller being very well known with designers. The ATR2740 offers high processing power to enable the part to decode the full DAB data rate of 1.8 Mbit, powerful enough to run any DMB service, and still have plenty of free processing power available on the ARM controller for customer software. This makes it easy to implement this device in complex environments, enabling a fast time to market.

The wide flexibility offered by the ATR2740 is given from the large variety of interfaces which can be supported. UART, USB, and SPI are available for control functions, and SSO, SFCO and RDI interfaces, as well as two audio outputs, either I2S or SPDIF, are implemented data interfaces.

Due to the high integration of the device, the external component count is as low as only two external parts (a simple crystal and an 8-MB Flash are required) plus a tuner solution to run the full DAB function. To run DMB, the video and audio processing must be added; in the case of the LG LW40, it is done on the laptop.

In particular, the DMB-enabled notebook PC utilizes DMB antenna and signal treatment modules that can be replaced with an optical disc drive (ODD) in the notebook PC. This allows users to opt between the DMB module and the ODD, increasing mobility.

As for consumers' preference for DMB receivers, notebook PCs rank second after mobile phones, and with the development of DMB, the DMB notebook market will likely grow.

TI and RadioScape Accelerate Development of Receivers for Digital Radio Mondiale Standard

TI and RadioScape Accelerate Development of Receivers for Digital Radio Mondiale Standard

OEMs Unveil First Dual DRM and DAB Receivers at IFA in Berlin

BERLIN, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- On the heels of their June announcement of the availability of chips and modules for the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE:TXN) (TI) and RadioScape have announced that multiple companies attending IFA in Berlin demonstrated product prototypes developed around TI's DRM350 digital baseband and RadioScape's RS500 module. Continuing to accelerate DRM's rollout, TI and RadioScape will enable products from consumer brands to appear on store shelves within the year. (For more information, please visit http://www.ti.com/drmsolution )

Among those unveiling designs at IFA are Morphy Richards (http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk/ ), Roberts Radio (http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/ ) and Sangean (http://www.sangean.nl/ ).

"The RS500 module from RadioScape using TI's DRM350 has enabled us to develop working DRM/DAB receiver prototypes in less than three months," says Gerry Thorn, Product Director at Roberts Radio. "TI and RadioScape continue to provide the innovations we need, allowing us to focus on key product features, creating new markets for digital radio and enhancing the user listening experience."

TI's DRM350 enables developers to create cost-effective dual DRM/DAB-based devices with a single chip and easily implement enhanced features on the integrated programmable DSP, such as digital content playback of MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. RadioScape's RS500 module, a complete DRM solution, is based on TI's DRM350 and includes all of the hardware and software necessary to support any combination of DRM, DAB, FM-RDS and AM. Cutting down significantly on the development time and resources needed from manufacturers to develop multi-standard receivers, applications include table-top radios, CD boom boxes, micro hi-fis and tuners.

"DRM radios will soon be available in mass-market quantities at affordable consumer prices, and the co-operation between TI, RadioScape and ourselves has played a crucial role in enabling manufacturers to design them in such a short time," said Gerhard Zeiler, CEO of RTL Group. "We are very committed to DRM and will actively work to encourage a rapid take up of this technology."

DRM is the only universal, non-proprietary digital radio system for the short-wave, medium-wave and long-wave AM broadcast bands, enabling a single tower to broadcast over a large geographic area with near-FM quality sound. DRM is supported by a wide network of broadcasters, equipment OEMs and silicon providers working together to design, promote and deliver low-cost receivers and content for worldwide markets. Through DRM, consumers will have access to more content than ever before.

SOISIC Announces Semiconductor Industry's First Silicon-Proven 90nm High-Speed Silicon-On-Insulator Design Kit

SOISIC Announces Semiconductor Industry's First Silicon-Proven 90nm High-Speed Silicon-On-Insulator Design Kit

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and GRENOBLE, France, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- SOISIC today introduced the industry's first Customer-Owned-Tooling (COT) design kit for 90-nm Silicon On Insulator (SOI) to enable fabless semiconductor companies to complete successful designs that are up to 35 percent faster and reduce power consumption by as much as 50 percent compared with chips manufactured on bulk CMOS processes. SOISIC's design kit is silicon-proven on Freescale Semiconductor's advanced 90nm SOI process technology.

The design kit consists of multi-Vt standard cell libraries, memory compilers and standard I/Os for manufacturing on Freescale's 90-nm SOI process technology. The immediate availability of the SOISIC Design Kit marks the entry of SOI technologies in the mainstream COT market. Other COT announcements are expected to follow.

"Until now, SOI supply was limited to large integrated devices manufacturers (IDMs) with proprietary EDA tools and flows and substantial up-front investment," said Eduard R. Weichselbaumer, President and CEO of SOISIC. "SOISIC's world class IP team has integrated Freescale's advanced SOI process technology with best-in-class device and design expertise to make this technology available to the mainstream COT market."

SOISIC is currently in the third generation of IP development at the 90-nm node. The market requires new devices with increased speed and lower power consumption concurrently. SOISIC's Design Kit will allow designers to fully utilize the benefits of SOI to meet the performance and power consumption benchmarks the industry demands.

This SOI technology demonstrates outstanding speed and power benefits compared with 90nm bulk CMOS processes:

-- 30 to 40 percent speed improvement
-- Reduction of power consumption by a factor of 2x
-- Up to 10 percent area reduction

This is achieved using SOISIC's SOI-specific patented IP, patented characterization methodology and proprietary architectures.

SOI design kit works with Standard EDA tools and flows

The SOISIC Design Kit lets SoC designers design with their industry standard EDA tool flows. No specific tools or retraining of customer engineers is required because all SOI specific effects are handled at the IP level making it fully transparent to the designers.

SOISIC continues to work closely with major EDA tool vendors to enhance their tool capabilities. The full design kit is available today from SOISIC.
